Dell has discovered a known fix for the 016-302 ESS Illegal Exception error.  It has nothing to do with the toner cartridges.  Here are the steps to follow if the message returns.  We would have to replace the ESS (Electronic Sub-System Board)as a last resort if it persisted.

  1. Disconnect all data connections from the printer
  2. Power the printer off and back on several times
  3. Print a Parameter Settings Report Page

    • Power off the printer
    • Close all printer covers and doors
    • Hold down the up and down buttons on the printer and power the printer on
    • Release your fingers from the keys when the message Diagnosing...appears. Customer Mode and ESS Diag (Electronic Sub-System) are displayed
    • Press the check button to select Customer Mode
    • Press the down button until Parameter appears and press the check button. On the LCD, the Parameter menu appears
    • Press the down button until Print appears and press the check button. TheParameter Setting Report prints
    • Press the Cancel button to stop the test
